Lake County was established in the late 1800s and was named for its many lakes within the county area. The county is proud to claim ownership to more than 1400 lakes according to some sources. To create this majestic county, the legislature took portions of land from Sumter County and Orange County. With its county seat located in beautiful Tavares, the population of Lake County continues to soar. The Florida census estimated the population in the year 2000 at 210,000. By 2008 this number has grown to over 307,000, making Lake County one of Florida's fastest growing areas.

The Lake County Courthouse is located at 550 West Main Street in Tavares. This new four story building replaced the older courthouse and is conveniently located across the detention facility and easily accessible in downtown Tavares only 10 minutes from State Road 441. Plans are already being finalized to more than double the size of the courthouse. Construction should be complete by 2010.
